The tax applies to plastic packaging produced in or imported into the UK that does not contain 30% recycled plastic. Packaging that contains at least 30% recycled material will be exempt from paying the tax.

Packaging that is exported into the UK will be liable for the tax whether it is filled or unfilled.

HOW MUCH IS THE PLASTIC PACKAGING TAX?

The tax will be £200 per metric tonne of packaging with less than 30% recycled content.

WHO WILL PAY THE PLASTIC PACKAGING TAX?

The tax will apply to all plastic packaging manufactured or imported and placed on the UK market. Alongside transport and tertiary packaging used in the export of goods.

The tax will be paid by the company who produces the finished product, or the importer of the finished product.
